The growing business of AI checkers

I’ve always wondered why people use Gen AI writing apps, given that it’s quite straightforward to use ChatGPT and the other LLMs to generate and edit any bunch of text. The latest Similarweb data is showing that other people are realising that too – user traffic for popular “Writing and Content Tools” (Jasper, Wordtune, Writesonic) has been dropping, and dramatically so in late April.

However, the category data shows that one app called Originality is bucking the trend with solid growth. Guess what it does? According to its website, Originality has “the most accurate AI detector” and is an “AI Plagiarism Checker, Fact Checker and Readability Checker.”

Ah, of course.

Originality’s website states that “we believe website owners should decide when to publish AI-generated content, and that content creators need an easy way to prove originality beyond AI detection scores. Plagiarism checkers have room for improvement.”

Indeed, it is going to be a big business to prove one’s writing is original when there’s so much AI slop around.

Anyway, I put this post through Originality’s AI checker and it said my copy was 99% original. It had better say that!
