Newsletter 71 – As I see it

In this week’s newsletter, I share a nice photo, and then recap what I wrote about plucking weeds from your LinkedIn garden, three silly Gen AI prompting myths, how many Gen AI apps you should learn, creating a ridiculous studio video of yourself with Gemini, and why you should stop arguing with me about AI water usage.

I’m trying something new this week with this newsletter: sharing a nice photo that I recently took before I begin the weekly recap. I was a photojournalist for five years in my youth, and I still love capturing the world as my eyes see it. Here’s one I took in Bishan, Singapore:

What I wrote this week.

LinkedIn has always been flooded with crappy posts because most members have no idea what type of content is worth a reader’s time. Gen AI has made this problem a million times worse. So I curate my news feed daily, like plucking weeds in a garden.

Three Silly Gen AI Myths I need to dispel.

Also, know that Gen AI cannot generate accurate diagrams, but it can label images pretty well.

I gasped when I saw an AI trainer on LinkedIn declare that it was sufficient for him/her to just know Microsoft Copilot. I understand where she’s coming from – there are just so many AI apps – but here’s my take on how many Gen AI apps you should learn.

Nvidia and its PC partners announced the RTX Spark laptops this week, claiming to “reinvent Windows PCs”. These laptops are powerful and cool, but I explain why you probably won’t buy them.

AI data centres currently use a lot of electricity and water, but Microsoft is building data centres that are highly efficient with water recycling. People who are anti-AI like to pick a fight with me over the water topic, but come on, just don’t use AI if you don’t like it. Your flight to your last vacation spot used more resources than all the prompts I wrote since 2022. I’m not blind to AI’s issues but we should also consider other data points about sustainability.

You too, can make a professional-looking studio spoof of yourself with Gemini.

I took a picture of a CNA video of myself explaining my philosophy on AI. It’s a fun way to introduce myself and convince people that I’m legit.

Fantastic life advice from KF Seetoh, whom I have looked up to since I was a young photojournalist.

The NTU campus newspaper Nanyang Chronicle has come back to life after a six-year hiatus.

I don’t know why so many people liked this ancient photo of my wife and me.

Sad fact: Singapore has become Arrakis.

That’s all, thanks for reading!
