I did a thought exercise with my undergrad students yesterday. I asked them to fill in a poll and suggest which jobs would survive the onslaught of AI. They proposed jobs such as nurses, vets, mechanics, and entertainers.
Then I asked them, “The job that you suggested – is that in your career plan?”
Most of them shook their heads.
I asked, “Then, what job are you going to do when the other jobs have disappeared? How will we solve this jobs problem for ourselves?”
The point of this exercise is to show that for many of us, even when we can see the future disruption coming, we don’t actually spend time figuring out what to do about it. Too many people hunker down and keep doing their daily work when that work may be better off automated.
It doesn’t matter whether you are a student or working adult, you MUST find out how AI will disrupt your life and decide how you will respond. Don’t be afraid to chart your near future, but be afraid if you don’t.
