The latest Andreessen Horowitz a16z report on the top 100 Gen AI apps is here, and there is so much to unpack I could write a week’s worth of posts.
What caught my eye:
1. AI-enabled apps like Canva and Capcut are now included, and that has allowed Canva to shoot to No. 3 on the list. This is a good methodology, because I have recently started subscribing to Canva just for its AI-powered editing capabilities.
2. Google AI Studio is No. 10!!! That’s really high for a complicated version of Gemini and has no subscription model (it’s pay per use).
3. If you read the full report, Singapore is top in the world for AI adoption per capita, followed by Hong Kong and UAE. I’m not surprised, but adoption does not equate to high AI literacy. Many people are still using AI at a basic level when they can do much more for free.
4. It’s disturbing that AI companion apps like Companion AI and Spicychat are still so popular. Don’t people get that these AIs are empty vessels?
This report is an important one that I follow as it informs the design of my AI training workshops. I also pay for seven of the apps on this list to make sure I walk the talk when I upskill others. Do read it in detail, and also watch the YouTube video from a16z on it.
