Enjoy your work

I was jogging at Bishan Park today when I saw beautiful sunrays streaming through the tree branches in the foggy air. I stopped at several points to take photos, and I was delighted to come upon this glowing scene of the taichi practitioners. I was reminded of my old job as a photojournalist, where it was such a joy to discover the best scene and angle for the “nab shot”.

I’ve been asked before, “Ian, you’ve done many jobs. Which was your favourite job?” My answer is always: “I’ve liked every job I’ve done”, because I’ve always sought to enjoy my work. I loved my photography job so much because I got to practice the craft with three news assignments a day, and I could learn from the best photographers in the business.

After five years, in 2003, I moved on because I wanted to try other things, and also because I didn’t agree with the way my photo editor managed us. Since then, I’ve enjoyed writing, editing, public relations, marketing, partnerships, running businesses, and now, teaching. At this juncture, I also enjoy being a Masters student and doing my external consultation work.

In the Book of Eccelesiastes, the wise author writes: “Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil – this is the gift of God. For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart.”

If you enjoy your work today, keep at it! If not, it’s time to seek your joy somewhere else!
