I was listening to a news feature which talked about how more companies want to hire people with “AI skills”. That’s a pretty broad requirement. Is it enough just to know how to write a prompt in ChatGPT?
No, I think the bar for “AI skills” has risen, and people need to demonstrate how they solve problems with their human thinking and AI proficiency.
I thought of this interview test for hiring managers who are serious about this requirement:
- Ask the job candidate to bring along his laptop for the interview.
- Set aside 15 minutes for a problem-solving session. The hiring manager will provide the data in a digital file, and tell the candidate there’s a hypothetical problem that needs to be solved (related to the job scope).
- “Now show me how you would solve this problem with both your human and AI skills.”
- “Next, show me how you will verify the data was properly used and there was no errors in your solution.”
- “Tell me the limitations of your solution and what potential problems can come out of using AI.”
Of course, the hiring manager must be highly proficient in order to conduct this test.
I’m designing new Gen AI workshops in 2026 to train professionals to use both their human skills and their AI skills to solve complex problems. Stay tuned!
