I read The Straits Times commentary by Jeremy Au Yong about the unbearable behaviour on LinkedIn. I won’t disagree with what he said, but the good news is, you can do something about it! Here’s how to curate your feed:
Unfollow anyone who posts anything that makes you feel “ugh”.
For me, it’s people who post incessant selfies but have nothing valuable to say. (So yes, I do follow some selfie kings and queens.)
Block anyone who says offensive stuff to you.
Don’t feel bad about it, they won’t even know.
Search for luminaries in your field and follow them to improve your news feed quality.
For example, in the AI field, I follow Yann LeCun (AI Godfather), Julien Chaumond (Hugging Face), Ethan Mollick (Prof AI), and more. In marketing, business, and leadership, I follow Sir John Hegarty, Ray Dalio, Guy Kawasaki and more.
LinkedIn is always suggesting new names to follow and I will review their previous posts before deciding if their content is worth my time. You have to keep curating in order to keep your feed interesting and useful.
FYI, I didn’t write this because I’m a Top Voice. I wrote it because I’ve been on LinkedIn for 15 years, and I’ve found immense value in using it, and in contributing to it. I believe LinkedIn is the one platform everyone needs to get on, then learn how to curate for their own needs, and use it to further their careers and personal branding.
