There are so many interesting things you can learn by looking at the 50 most popular Gen AI web products compiled by Andreessen Horowitz using Similarweb data, as of Jan 2025.
The top two, ChatGPT and DeepSeek, are no surprise. What I see:
- Perplexity is 4th! Wow, Google should be sweating. But I must warn you that Perplexity can hallucinate, so always check the source info.
- Many people are lonely – chat companions like Character AI, Janitor AI, and SpicyChat AI rank highly. Seriously, go meet real people!
- Claude (great for coding and writing) is more popular than I thought. I subscribe to it, but most people I talk to have never heard of it. If Claude does better marketing, it can displace the top two boys.
- Rapid growth of builder apps like Bolt (text-to-websites), Liner (machine learning) and Cursor (code editing).
- Made-in-China apps are growing in dominance. I mean, that shouldn’t be surprising, but the numbers prove it. Doubau (Chinese LLM) is fascinating to use.
- Hailuo leads the pack for video generation. I’m surprised Sora is even up there, the quality of its videos falls far short of its marketing.
